Thermal Physiology in Health and Disease: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Applications

03 Jun 2025 09:00 - 04 Jun 2025 17:30 - Brunel University London Kingston Lane Uxbridge UB8 3PH

Thermal interventions induce a myriad of physiological responses which for some systems are comparable to physical activity. Thermal therapy has been implemented in humans for millennia, but its effectiveness in treating contemporary diseases and disorders require further examination. Additionally, advancing mechanistic understanding of the influence of thermal stress on physiological systems is important given it can enhance the implementation and efficacy of thermal interventions.

Despite positive emerging evidence, thermal interventions are not without health risks. Relatedly, global temperatures and the frequency and intensity of heat waves are increasing. Therefore, understanding mechanisms associated with heat illnesses is of growing relevance for both vulnerable populations, and otherwise healthy populations undertaking exercise/physical activity in the heat.

With fewer individuals adhering to physical activity recommendations, and with more people becoming exposed to extreme temperatures, there is a critical need to better understand the opportunities and risks associated with thermal stress.
